The following are family news and happenings from 2002 as they were written throughout the year.
A new year has started and life is back to normal in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Fredrik started school again January 8 and he enjoys spending the days at Mont' Kiara International School. The school day is quite long for a 5-year old boy, from 08:30 to 15:00. Once a week they have PE (Physical Education) and every Monday afternoon he has Karate Training. Fredrik also goes to Art Class every Friday and he really enjoys that as well. His favorite hobby at the moment is playing TV-games on the Sony Playstation he got for Christmas. He is becoming a real pro in most of the games on the market today, but Monsters Inc. and Toy Story 2 are his absolute favorites.
Inger and Morten are still taking Spanish Lessons every Saturday and are now quite familiar with the basics of that language. But they still have a long way to go and expect to do classes throughout the year. They have a private teacher from Chile and she is quite good in teaching the different ways of saying things in different parts of the Spanish speaking world.
Inger's brother Björn Gerdman paid us a visit in the beginning of January. We had a lot of fun together and Fredrik enjoyed playing with uncle Björn. Morten got some real hard exercise playing squash with him a couple of times. Tina Göransson, Inger's sister in law from Sweden, visited us in the beginning of March. Then Marian, Roy, Benjamin, Mathias and Wench from Tromsø, Norway, visited us from 5-20 April. You can see all our visitors on the visitors page.
We had a nice vacation at Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Australia, from February 7 to 17. We had an apartment at Paradise Center Resort which was right on the beach at Surfer's Paradise. We visited all the fun theme parks like Warner Bros. Movie World, Dreamworld, Seaworld and Wet 'n' Wild Water Park.See pictures from this vacation by clicking here.
At the beginning of April we took a trip to Bejing, China. We booked a bonus trip with SAS and left from KL Thursday March 28 and returned April 2. We stayed at the SAS Radisson Hotel for the 5 nights. It was really fun to see the Great Wall, Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City for the first time. We took a short mini-vacation to Pan Pacific Resort at Pangkor, Malaysia, 14-16 April together with our visitors from Tromsø.
Fredrik and Inger went home to Malmö, Sweden, 6 June. Morten joined them for the midsummer celebration 22 June. We spent 24 and 25 June in our old hometown of Tønsberg in Norway, and after that we all went to Botnhamn, Northern-Norway, for 3 weeks of relaxation on 25 June. We took a trip to Kristiansand 11 July so Fredrik could meet his big hero Captain Sabeltann again as he did last year. The pirate show in Kristiansand Zoo and Amusement Park is just a magnificent show for kids. Morten went back to Malaysia 14 July for Superstar Virgo's dry-docking in Singapore. Fredrik and Inger headed back to Malmö 14 July and spent another 3 weeks there before going back to Malaysia 3 August in order to reach Fredrik's school start.
Christmas was celebrated with friends and family in Botnhamn up in Northern Norway. It was really nice with some snow and cold in order to get the right Christmas spirit again. Inger and Morten spent Christmas in Malmö, Sweden, in 1989, 1995 and 1996. The last Christmas Morten spent home in Botnhamn was 16 years ago in 1986. It was about time to be home for Christmas again. Fredrik had never seen snow and didn't know what "cold" was. He had such an experience as Botnhamn is north of the artic circle and the winters are "real" winters this far north. During December there is only daylight for 5-6 hours as the sun never rises above the horizon.
OK, that was all family news for 2002. We will be adding news for 2003 on another page, so stay tuned!
Fredrik, Inger and Morten.
